Remote Learning
At St Silas CE Primary School, we are committed to ensuring that every child’s education remains seamless, engaging, and closely aligned with our school curriculum, even when learning from home.
Our remote education program is designed to mirror the high-quality classroom experience, utilising a curated suite of digital tools and resources that our pupils are already familiar with. Through platforms like Google Classroom and Showbie, teachers set daily tasks that follow our termly learning journeys, ensuring no child misses a step in their progress.
To support core skills, we integrate interactive apps such as Times Tables Rock Stars, Century and Wayground to support the implementation of our core subjects' intent.
By blending these innovative apps with teacher-led instruction and high-quality physical resources, we provide a structured, supportive remote curriculum that empowers our students to flourish independently.
This statement outlines our remote education offer in the event of school closure.
The Remote Curriculum: What is taught?
Our remote education program is designed to mirror the high-quality classroom experience.
- Consistency: We teach the same curriculum remotely as we do in school. This ensures that when pupils return, they are at the same point in their 'learning journey' as their peers.
- Daily Delivery: Teachers set daily tasks that follow our curriculum plans, ensuring no child misses a setup in their progress.
Remote Teaching and Study Time
We expect that remote education (as a daily average) will take pupils the following amount of time to complete:
- Key stage 1: 3 hours a day.
- Key stage 2: 4 hours a day.
Our Digital Tools and Resources
We use a range of digital tools that our pupils are already familiar with. This 'blended' approach includes:
- Learning Platforms: We use Showbie, Century and Google Classroom to set work, distribute resources and provide feedback.
- Early Reading and Phonics: To support our youngest learners, we provide daily Read Write Inc. phonics videos and resources to ensure that children continue to make progress.
- Core Subject Apps: We use a range of apps to support learning across the curriculum:
- Times Tables Rock Stars (TTRS) and NumBots (maths fluency)
- Century Tech (personalised learning pathways in a range of subjects
- Wayground
- Live and Recorded Content: Teachers may provide recorded explanations or 'live' check-ins via Google Meet to explain new concepts and also to maintain social connection.
Accessing Remote Education
We understand that some families may face challenges with technology at home. REMAT schools support pupils by:
- Lending school-owned devices (ChromeBooks / iPads) where possible.
- Providing printed work packs and physical resources (e.g. stationery or reading books) for those children who cannot access the internet.
- Offering support with data routers for famnilies with limited connectivity.
Engagement and Feedback
- Expectations: We expect pupils to log in daily and complete the tasks set. We appreciate parental support in establishing a routine that supports learning.
- Assessment: Teachers will check work regularly. Feedback may be provided through voice notes on Showbie, written comments on Google Classroom or through automated marking features within apps like Century and TTRS.
Additional Support for Pupils with SEND
We understand that some pupils, for example those with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND), may find it difficult to access remote education without support. We work closely with families to provide appropriate support, adapted resources and regular contact from our SEND and Pastoral Teams.
